Nico Gutierrez was born in Poughkeepsie N.Y. 1971, to Barbara Dale Gutierrez and Wayne Gutierrez. Nico was raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn N.Y. and The Catskill Mountains in upstate New York. His father Wayne, a professional show drummer, inspired, influenced and taught Nico at the ripe age of 10 years old, how to play the drums and entered him into the elementary school band to learn music theory.
Nico continued on playing in the elementary band, junior high band and the Fallsburg High School orchestra band and chorus. Joining the navy out of high school, Nico also played snare drum in the Navy boot camp band in San Diego California. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Nico continued to play drums around in local rock and roll bands.
Nico continues to study the modern drum set. He has immersed himself into Afro-Cuban percussion as well as Brazilian percussion for the past 15 years and is currently studying the Steel Drum.
Nico has studied with Wayne Gutierrez, Mark Lamson, Patrick J Burke, and Bill Ray. He has studied Afro-Cuban percussion with Mark Lamson, Michael Spiro, Regino Jimenez, Gary Greenberg, Juan Carlos Blanco, Poncho Sanchez, Fransico Aguabella He is currently studying the Lead Steel Drum and music theory with Patrick J. Burke and Tom Gates Nico has been a member of and shared the stage with: Sol E Mar (Escola De Samba), Island Fever, Quino of "Big Mountain", Los Travellers, Bruce Cameron and the Latin Jazz All-Stars, Glen Fisher Con Alma, The Gomango Invasion Orchestra, Lee Brown, Javid (Nuevo Flamenco), Gatos Papacitos, The Boogiemen, Joe Rathburn's Island, Hat Trick, We Kinda Music, The Adrian Nimms Band, Juan Carlos Blanco Afro-Cuban Dance Class.
For the past several years Nico has been performing in his own steel drum band "Caribbean Steel" in the Las Vegas and San Diego area. He has recently relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and we are very excited and proud to welcome him to A1A's musical family!
